Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) Review

Isaac Bol, Writer

The movie, Sonic the Hedgehog, is much like the actual character. It’s a fun and fast paced thrill ride that doesn’t slow down.

When Sonic, Ben Schwartz, is hiding on Earth to protect himself from others trying to steal his powers of super speed, he accidentally causes a nationwide power outage that causes government agent Doctor Robotnik, Jim Carrey, to search for Sonic and abuse his powers. Sonic must then take a trip to San Francisco to find items he once lost, rings that can teleport him out of Earth. With the help of Officer Tom Wachowski, played by James Marsden, the two go on a road trip to San Francisco to save Sonic from the evil Doctor Robotnik.

The movie is a complete joy ride through and through. Containing a lot of actions, laughs, and emotional moments, this movie is another great video game movie with lots of care out into it. With lots of easter eggs throughout the movie, it feels like the movie is honoring the fans of Sonic for being fans. The director of the movie, Jeff Fowler, really shows that has a passion for the character and wanted to make the best movie he could, not just a simple cash grab. He showed that he cared with not only with the design change to a more accurate model of Sonic, but by making the actual movie a great video game movie, one of the best we have so far. This movie is a movie made by a fan for fans and I am happy that it got made. If you had told me three months ago that Sonic would be great, I would’ve told you that you were lying. But it is and it should be seen in the theater. But if you aren’t a big fan of Sonic, don’t ignore the movie, you’ll still find enjoyment in it because you don’t need any prior knowledge before seeing the movie to truly enjoy it.
