Cheer team takes crown at regional tournament, punches ticket to nationals

Just before heading to break, the Santa Ana High cheer squad took part in a regional competition at Damien High in LaVerne with hopes of a return to nationals.

Before taking the floor, the team held hands (right over left) and repeated its mantra, “Good, better, best. Never let it rest till your good is your good and your better is your best. If she can do it and he can do it, so can I. We will. Hit. And never quit.”

It paid off soon after their performance, when the team sat in a circle during the ceremony as they anticipated finding out where they placed and if they qualified for nationals. They soon learned they hit a zero (no mistakes in their routine), placed first, and qualified for nationals, which will take place February 24 at the Anaheim Convention Center.

In the meantime, the team will look to add to its trophy case when it competes at CIF championships on January 21 at MLK High in Riverside.

“I didn’t feel nervous performing because I was pretty confident in all stunts hitting,” senior cheerleader Kimberly Licea said. “It was a good feeling getting off the mat after we had hit zero. It boosted our team confidence to go full out,” she added when asked about placing first. “I’m very excited and look forward to nationals again. I’m motivated to hit zero and making it to day two.”

Head coach Brian Jones credited his team for staying together and named a few of its upcoming goals. “It’s the team coming together to continue tradition at Santa Ana Cheer,” he said. “I was very proud because their hard work is finally paying off and everyone is trusting the process. Future long term goals are to continue to grow our strong program in the competition realm by leveling up to the advanced division and competing in Florida. Also having baby saints and jr. cheer clinic this winter and of course having our seniors cheer in college.”
