On Thursday, Jan. 9, Santa Ana High’s girls soccer team fell short in its second league game of the season with a 4-1 loss against Fullerton.
During the first half the Saints (9-6-2, 3-3 Freeway League) worked hard to keep the ball in their possession, but trailed the Indians (13-5-3, 3-0-1), 1-0 at halftime.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Fullerton netted two more goals to go up 3-0.
The Indians would go on to score once more and after some back and forth and a fight for possession, the lady Saints were able to take hold of it and senior Crystal Uribe scored the only goal of the contest for Santa Ana.
Senior captain Brianna Hernandez said “We didn’t really work together as a team, but I have faith that next game we will pull through and make it a win.” She said they will achieve this by “connecting, playing as a team, communicating, and attacking together.”
Senior Emmily Perez hopes in their next match they “give it our all and we don’t get in our heads so hopefully we can bring it home.”
On January 14, the Saints won a league game by a score of 5-1 against Calvary Chapel (5-9-1, 0-4), before losing a close one, 2-1, against Garden Grove (9-2-3, 3-0-1) on January 21.
The Saints picked up a 2-0 shutout over Westminster (4-5-1, 1-4) on January 23.
“This game we were working together to create plays that lead to goals,” Hernandez said after the win over Westminster. “Our previous game against Garden Grove wasn’t the best but we kept our heads up and redeemed ourselves. To my team, I am very proud of all of you for not giving up even though at times things aren’t going our way, and I’m happy that we’ve learned how to encourage and motivate each other.”
Santa Ana had a 1-0 setback at Fullerton on the 28. Freshman Sophia Thibodeaux netted the lone goal of the contest.
The Saints return to the field Wednesday, Feb. 5, set to host Garden Grove at 5 p.m. in the regular season finale.
