On Friday, Feb. 7, the Elizabeth G. Macias Legal Academy students, as well as the members of the mock trial team, had the opportunity to learn about Justice Cruz Reynoso at the Court of Appeal, Fourth District, Division Three, Cruz Reynoso Courthouse.
Accompanying the students was Mr. Mitchell, the Legal Studies instructor, Ms. Andaya, and Mr. Chacon.
The students made their way to the courthouse by foot and were checked thoroughly before being let in.
From the beginning, the students were amazed by the courthouse, it was beautifully decorated, the paintings depicting the streets of Orange County.
Once all the students were checked in, they were brought into the courtroom where they were able to greet Judge Macias and Justice Thomas A. Delaney.
Justice Delaney was the Justice presenting about Justice Cruz Reynoso. Justice Delaney gave the students in insight into why this appellate court is named after him. The students learned so much about Justice Cruz Reynoso. For instance, they learned about his accomplishments, his studies, and what he fought for. They even learned that Justice Cruz Reynoso worked alongside Caesar Chavez at some point. Judge Macias would also add comments and address the students from time to time.
After Justice Delaney’s presentation on Justice Cruz Reynoso, he answered any question the students had regarding the legal field and current events. While some students did ask questions Judge Delaney could not answer, he remained professional and kind.
“My favorite part about the field trip has to be meeting Justice Delaney and asking him questions about the court and getting to learn more about the legal studies field,” senior Dominick Cisneros said.
Diego Zotea said, “I liked learning about Judge Cruz Reynoso and all the things he has done from a young age. From humble beginnings to something great.”
